Basil Brush a racist?

Boom Boom! Right. Because nobody believed me that they called Basil Brush a racist, here’s a blog post about it. :)

A ‘person of the travelling community’ (a gypsy from Northamptonshire, basically) has reported that Basil Brush had been racist towards their way of life. The reported episode involved a female fortune-teller fox selling heather and pegs to Basil on his way home.

The episode was a repeat which was shown in March. The original episode had been broadcast much earlier, and had even made it onto Basil’s DVD, titled Basil Unleashed. Doesn’t the fact that nobody had complained before just go to show how this is being blown out of proportion a little bit?

Their claim is that this sort of racism towards the travelling community is one of the few sections of ‘social racism’ that’s around still. Sure, if it was a black Basil selling… something racist about black people, then sure, they’d probably get into serious trouble. But whenever anyone tells a joke about gypsies, nobody really moans, do they? They’re normal people… in caravans as far as I’m concerned.

But from a personal point of view, how did they see that episode in the first place? To watch BBC TV you need a TV licence. To get a TV licence you need a fixed address. So… aren’t they more illegal than Basil is? Silly people. The fact that Northamptonshire Police, already under staffed and under pressure, are looking into this in more depth is ridiculous. Let sleeping dogs, or in this case foxes, lie.
