I don’t know if I told you or not, but meh, the Boy’s Brigade people had a marching competition tonight. A competition they enter always hoping they would beat the bigger teams who always win.
We met at the Methodist church in Kingsthorpe, like we usually do, to practice. Obviously, being about 8-10 years old, they were rather scared of a hall full of people judging their every move. The practice went virtually flawless compared to how others went in the past. We had Paul leading, as usual, who knew what he was doing so everyone could follow suit. There were 7 in the end, with one coming in at the last minute, but didn’t know the routine so couldn’t join in. That’s a shame.
They all made their own way up to this church in Far Cotton where some Scouts also meet up, by the looks of things. They were running a bit late because Tim wanted to practice more than they should’ve, really. Nevertheless Sue, Margaret and myself took our seats with roughly 50 other people watching their son march to some song. Man, they must love their child.
There were only 4 companies participating (Most don’t bother because of their lacklustre performances before. I remember when I did these things they were always quite busy) with the company who eventually won it starting it off with their march which was more complicated than, well, a lot of things. Every company had music but the 3rd company – Our company – who just did it with the rhythm of their feet marching along.
We performed really well, given that we only had about half the people the other groups had. We came joint third (Which, basically, was last), but they enjoyed it. On the way up there, Sue was talking about how they didn’t mention their group last year because they didn’t come in the top 3. That’s just cruel. You have to give them some credit for all that effort they put in. Can they remember how boring doing the same thing again and again was as a 10 year old?
I’m proud of the little guys. I couldn’t have done any better myself. There was a guy in ours who had only been doing it 2 weeks. Good for him, I say. Fantastic performance, nonetheless, and I’m sure you’ll like not doing drills before football.
