R.I.P Cap’n.

Captain Birdseye - BBC.CO.UKI was in the car on my way home from teaching those kids stuff and hear some shocking news. Yes. Captain Birdseye has died.

John Hewer, who played Captain Birdseye for almost 30 years, passed away Sunday night simply due to old age. Well, he was 86.

Whether you know this frightful fellow as Captain Birdseye, Capitan Findus or Käpt’n Iglo, he was an iconic TV character best known for selling his fish fingers. From 1967, John Hewer had played the character in virtually every Birdseye ad up until 1998, when he retired from the role.

So what was this Uncle Albert doing other than being the captain of the fish? Well, believe it or not he’s an accredited actor, with his most famous theatrical performance being in ‘The Boy Friend’ in the 1950s in Broadway. Sure, it might sounds quite… homoerotic, that play but he starred opposite Julie Andrews, so it can’t be all that bad…

You can relive some of his adverts on Youtube. Here if you’re English and here if your Italian. See. He got around a bit.

Unfortunately, I have to also put this, copied from Wikipedia’s talk page. “John, rest in peas – you’re in a better plaice now”.
