The Trouble with Religion

WARNING: This blog post will probably insult you in one way or another, whether you’re religious in any way, use the word ‘racist’ without actually knowing what it means, or perhaps just don’t like my tone. Meh. You should stop reading now then, if you’re like that because believe me, you won’t like me for saying what I do further down.

I was up until quite late last night talking to Simon. That’s got absolutely nothing to do with it, apart from the fact that what led me to stay up so late to see Simon online was the fact that I was amazed by an episode of Jeremy Kyle without a chav on it

David McKay - blick.ch It was about a group called the Jesus Christians, a small group of people led by a man called David McKay. Cutting a long story short, he is the leader of a group which believes it should take the pain of the sins of other Christians and their own by means of whipping. I mean, whatever you get up to in your own time is your own business, but the fact that members of the Jesus Christians were not allowed to be functioning members of society any longer is something I don’t think is great. You can learn more about them on their website, but I’m not going to go into great detail now.

What it did do, however, was spark my memories of one member of YouTube I’ve come to love. Not only because of his view on religion, but also the way he presents it. May I introduce Pat Condell.

Essentially, this man is an atheist. I say essentially, it’s because he doesn’t say so, he just says “Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying religion doesn’t have its uses. Personally I turn to it whenever I want my intelligence insulted.” and, in a way, I agree with him. I think he’s God.

He says something similar to what I say a lot. “Actually, my problem is not with God, but with God’s little helpers, the ones who take it upon themselves to police the rest of us on his behalf. These people give religion a bad name, which, given its history, takes some doing.”. I hate the God fanclubs. The people who just don’t stop going on about their ‘one true God’, whether it’s on the streets (Which I find incredibly annoying) or with you one-to-one.

The Bible - And appropriate warning label Let’s get this straight. I can tolerate those who are religious – I’ve got no problem with them doing whatever they want to do in their spare time – it’s just when they try to involve me into following their beliefs it’s when it starts to annoy me. Back in that Geography lesson, Andy and Timi – when we were debating whether God exists or not – I’m sure you guessed it really pissed me off. I don’t believe in God.

Although I can’t find it now, I know I’ve mentioned my hatred for Abington Street on a Saturday, with all those God-botherers out in force. I had another one on my tail today (Although most of you, who didn’t actually bother to get out of your beds to join me, didn’t see it) who was pleading with me not to just keep walking on because it wasn’t a survey. But anyway, I counted as I went down Abington Street for the number of god-botherers out in force there. Guess how many I counted – Five. Yes, five people who were spending their Saturdays telling me how my life is wrong according to Jesus. Screw you, I’m not Jesus.

Which leads me back to the Jesus Christians. When I first heard about them (admittedly yes, it was on that episode of Jeremy Kyle) I thought “Oh my. People would do that just to please Jesus? Either they have the wrong end of the stick, or Jesus was a bastard”. Then I realised. Normal Christians are like that too. Perhaps they’re not as extreme, but they let their lives be lead by someone they’ve read in a book. Someone who may or may not have existed – given that the bible wasn’t written until generations after Jesus (and wouldn’t you have thought that if someone so amazing would have existed, that at least one person would’ve said “Is anyone writing this down? This man’s a legend!”… just in Hebrew, I would imagine.)

Anyway. I’ll end it there. If you want to learn any more about…
