I think I did a blog post about them back when they released their first cover of the The Who classic My Generation, but I’d like to just big them up again, if I may.
Just to recap for the newcomers, The Zimmers are a British band consisting of around 40 pensioners and have a combined age of around 3000. They came to fame through two channels – One being the BBC documentary Power To The People.
In the documentary, they followed several old people stuck in high-rise flats because of mobility problems. Some hadn’t been outside for a number of years. So they got the people to get them outside and go shopping and do various activities with them. It was actually a really good show, and thanks to the documentary maker Tim Samuels and his genius idea, they were able to keep the awareness of these lonely people alive even a couple of years on.
The second route of popularity came through a popular member of YouTube and band member Peter Oakley. He announced their first single and, afterwards, managed to get it up to #26 in the UK Singles Chart based on that alone. I thought that’s quite impressive.
Since then, they have done another cover, this time of The Prodigy’s classic tune Firestarter.
They are also releasing an album in Germany first on September 19th and everywhere else on October 6th. It’ll be called Just for Life so look out for it.
On a final note, as mentioned by the great man himself, they will be releasing a song from that album sung by him called Old and Wise which is able to be purchased on iTunes by tomorrow. All profit made goes to The Zimmers charity, supporting many a project. Buy it now, or you’ll probably regret it.
