Argos Christmas Temp Interview

Okay, that was probably the most surreal event of the year so far.

It’s no secret that I need a job, right? I mean, I’ve been looking all summer and now finally places are starting to hire for Christmas. Sorted. I applied at Argos on the 2nd – only a day after when they started looking – because I’m that keen.

I get post on the 5th telling me I had a group interview lined up on the 10th, and to give this lady a ring to tell her I was coming. She sounded nice on the phone, so I thought this could be the beginning of something awesome. It’s a shame the interview clashed with the first day back of Boy’s Brigade, but I’m sure I can introduce myself next Wednesday. :)

Anyway, I get there about 10 minutes early because there was less traffic than we’d guessed. There were most of the people in there already just sorting out who they were, but there was one problem – My clothing. I went how I went to the Waitrose interview, which was just shirt and trousers. Smart casual. The rest? Jeans and T-shirt. They looked like they thought they might as well stroll in and get a job today because they felt like it. Meh. I had GCSEs, which by the look of it the majority didn’t…

Firstly, we paired up and had to find out about the other person to present it to the group of 15 or so people. That wasn’t bad. Apart from when I said I enjoy Photography not Geography, I go to Northampton School for Boys not ‘School Boys Northampton’ and I most certainly don’t enjoy playing a sport called ‘bardington’, but whatever.

Then we filled out this form thing, which was asking if these two sets of numbers were the same or not. It’s dead easy, but something I know I stupidly mess up on. Going by the fact some people said it was hard (Mainly some guy who was actually called ‘Mohammed Ali’).

Finally, there came the surreal moment. We had 20 minutes to design a new uniform for Argos using a few plastic bags, cellotape, some scissors and a stapler. Poor Denise was our chosen model, who we fashioned our practical sort of bomber-jacket type deal on. We managed to claim she was “easily identifiable” in her yellow and purple suit, and was easily approachable. The flares and the bangle were a nice added touch. For taste.

But yeah. Not so much of an interview as a… fun time. I’d heard people had to make towers out of spaghetti and marshmallows before, but nothing quite like that this time. It only took an hour – Something that was a luxury from the Waitrose one.

I hope I get this job, even if it is just temporary, as the staff are just amazing. :)

Well, certainly not a place where I’d like to work… oh, and remind me to never apply for a job interview in England. Just TOO weird! Can’t they just sit in an office with you and ask you what are your faults and qualities? o.O

You always seem to get the fun interviews. Why can’t all jobs be like that, even though I have only had one interview which consisted of 3 questions:
    Are you good with money?
    Are you polite?
    Are you reliable?

Got the job there and then :D

So V, not all our interviews are weird, only Matt!

I wouldn’t say ‘fun’, as such. It’ll be a complete shock when I actually need to have a *gasp* proper interview. :P

i also had a group interview for argos a few weeks ago. there were 10 of us, of those 8 wore jeans/ tshirts. and four chewed gum and constantly checked their mobiles for missed texts. i was smartly dressed, polite, chatty, asked questions, spoke up when spoken too. all in all i thought the interview went really well. how gutted was i when 6pm came and went on the day they were going to notify the “chosen ones”. all i can say is, if that is the standard of staff they recruit i am glad i didnt get the job!!!!

Argos are definitely concentrating on the career side of things recently. They put a new site up, solely about the different areas of work available and how to apply, at https://secure.argoscareers.com/.

i have my group interview next week and i’m crapping it so much.
i think i’d prefer a normal interview, i hear some argos’ make you write poems about their store and then sing them and all that jazz.
i’m so regretting applying for here! honestly, if i have to get up and make some tower from spagetti and mallows then i’m fucked.
what’s worse, if the 10/15 people i’m in with are complete dooshbags then i’m gonna get so embarrassed
praise the lord i got some weirdos in the room to make me look better!
does it get any better..? or just worse..

I have been invited to a recruitment evening tomorrow and I really don’t know what to expect? Has anyone else been to one this year yet?

i went last year. on the group evening 30 people turned up, we had to interview the person next to us, then do a presentation based on their answers. then we had to see if we could identify codes and number sequences, then finally had to go into 2 groups, then as i was selected as team-leader by my team for the sole reason that i thought up a good name for our team ( the argos factor!) switch teams mid-task,…. to make a lego bridge big enough for one of us to slide under. I got the job, didnt like the first few weeks but i kept on from november to the end of january, so… il hopefuly apply again this year.
