Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross abuse Andrew Sachs

Well, it’s been on top of the news this week (Like Russell Brand and Andrew Sachs’ grand-daughter. Whey.), so I thought it’s only fitting to blog about it.

For those who don’t actually know what I’m talking about, Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross are British celebrity comedians who both appear on TV on a regular occasion.

On Russell’s radio show, however, they both prank called Andrew Sachs’ (Manuel from Fawlty Towers) home phone after he didn’t answer his phone for a phone interview. So instead of conducting an interview, they rang his answer phone four times talking about how Russell had sexual relations with his grand-daughter.

"Branded" a bad person. AHAH.

You can hear the “interview” here.

Now, it’s not a secret that I hate Russell Brand with a passion. Jonathan Ross I can tolerate, but I’ve never been a huge fan.

But still, I’ve got to support them in the whole thing. Sure, it’s a really bad and unfunny joke to play, but at least they were actually joking rather than doing it in all seriousness. They’ve apologised, and that’s all they can really do.

But Sachs could’ve easily gone to the Police about the matter, and if he did then it would’ve been a contrast of the famous and the pranksters. If he did go to the Police, then they probably wouldn’t have battered an eyelid, seeing as they’re famous. But if it was a ‘youth’ who had done it, for example, then they would’ve severely punished.

"Hello? ... you did WHAT to my grand-daughter?"

It was a pre-recorded show, which was approved by many people before it went to air, so it couldn’t have been all bad. Originally, the program had picked up over 1,000 complaints (which, I’ll admit, isn’t good in any light), but as soon as the media picked up on it, this number skyrocketed. It currently stands at over 27,000 complaints – A record amount.

It’s just another example of how the mainstream are influenced by the media. Sure, I’m not saying that listeners to Radio 2 would accept this sort of conversation, but the fact they’ve put up with Brand this long is sign that they have some sort of level of tolerance. It’s probably something more attributed to Radio 1. Research has shown that the older generation (typical Radio 2 listeners) were appalled by it, but the teenagers (typical Radio 1 listeners) found it a bit of fun and supported the comedian’s side.

So, in summary. This show was broadcast two weeks ago, which has only just become a big thing. You would’ve thought it was such a bad thing it would’ve been picked up on immediately. So however much I hate them, I think that Russell and Jonathan were wrongly shown up, simply because of the way the media is. And that sucks.
