Humans vs. Zombies

You know me, I’m always up for a bit of a flashmob. But when asked to participate in a Humans vs. Zombies game, that was a bit over the top for my liking. One of my new year’s resolutions was to be less nerdy, and I don’t see how I’d do that by participating in a game one step from becoming a full on Dungeons and Dragons role-play. I decided not to participate. But when I heard that a few good friends were playing, I decided to swing myself in as an organiser dude, taking photos and whatnot. Awesome.

Jake seems to be the head organiser of Humans vs. Zombies Northampton, so you know, I might as well jump on the bandwagon. The ‘First Encounter‘ was today up at Abington Park.

HvZ 1 So this was the play area. Nobody really went on the sports pitches, but yeah. Most of the action happened around the wood because, well, that’s really the only place the zombies could attack in. Since they have no weapons, they need stealth, and stealth is hard to come by in rolling fields…

Wright's brother. Ahah. There were four activities to play along the way. The first was a scavenger hunt where the humans had to find two balls and a map within the wood. The one zombie at the time – Jake – was out to stop them. Unfortunately, he didn’t get anyone at this point, but he did get Chris as Harry’s brother Steve (Yeah, he’s Steve Wright, just in the morning – Radio 2 jokes are lost on you people) found the map. The map was supposed to be useful for something, but apparently it wasn’t.

Best. Pose. Ever. After some more lurking for the zombies, it was on to game two. Humans had to defend this log square in the wood for half an hour. If a zombie were to set foot in this square, then the humans failed their mission. However, they were successful in their defence and were awarded… a safe place to eat lunch. Hoorah.

On the way we met Igor the squirrel. Apparently, he’s a lucky, fearless squirrel. Quick. Go join his appreciation society.

Okay, so this isn't me, but it's a pretty relevant picture...The third task involved me. Uh-oh. From the ruins, the humans had to get me – un-hit – to the rose gardens. That was amazingly easy, given that the zombies now had Carl, Simon and Jack as well as Chris, Phil and Jake. The field just before the rose garden was pretty slippy, but I didn’t get ambushed, so that’s all fine by me.

Then the final showdown. After a few little mini-fights after that, there were only five humans left, who all seemed to be Eddie’s friends. How… convenient. Although, it’s not called The Last Stand for nothing.

The Last Stand Survivors are stationed at the top of this hill where a tower is located. The idea is to… stay alive for as long as possible. Any zombies hit had to go to the bottom of the hill and start again.

Slowly but surely survivors became zombies, until everyone pretty much died, whether it was due to tiredness or death.

Then we had a group photo. How nice. :)

TEAM. YEAH.

All in all, it wasn’t bad. It was a laugh, and meeting some new people along the way. What a way to waste valuable learning time, but still, what a way…

If you want to see more pictures, check out my Facebook album of them just here. Enjoy. :)
