So yesterday my sister’s boyfriend Martin played in a game at the Sixfields Stadium. He’s part of the Northampton Town Fan’s team – generally known as The Shoemakers – playing to raise money for the club’s Football in the Community project. Your guess is as good as mine as to what they actually do, but hey ho.
The Shoemakers are part of the IFA (That is, the Internet Football Association), which is an online league which pits rival fans teams against each other, assuming they all organise it themselves. It’s supposed to build bridges with rival clubs, but after hearing about some incident with throwing a corner flag into a bush in rage, it’s not all that friendly…
The Staff/Legends team was actually fielded by people I knew. People like Ian Sampson and Ray Warburton, who were around when I was a wee nipper. Apparently, those two formed a legendary defence together, but pfft, I didn’t see it…
Other people on the legend’s team were members of the Football in the Community project, Paul Currier the groundsman and ‘deadly’ striker, along with Jagger and Woody… who never actually bothered to turn up. That’s nice of them, eh?
Well, after an hour and a half of entertainment ‘and even a little bit of football’ as Roger puts it oh-so-wittingly over the tanoy, the score finished 7-4 to the legends. Shame. Martin set up a couple of goals, and could’ve got one of his own, but just couldn’t get to it in time. Never mind. It’s all in the spirit of things.
On Saturday, Sixfields plays host to another charity event – It’s something to do with the cast of Hollyoaks versus some staff of various places. It’s more expensive, but I think Jagger and Woody will actually turn up to that one…
