National Sandwich Day

Today – November 3rd – is National Sandwich Day. I know what you’re thinking, and yes, I will wait until you have made a sandwich before you read any more. :)

*Not me - Obviously - but I wish it was. I want to be that awesome... Today is the 291st birthday of John Montagu, who you may know as the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Of course he’s not alive today (although that would be quite cool) but this is the guy who has been credited with the brilliant idea of putting stuffs in between two slices of bread. Arguably it was the best thing since sliced bread.

While he did popularise it, Sandwich didn’t make the aforementioned delight. He had ordered his servant to bring some meat between two slices of bread and other people loved the idea. It became popular and people just started to order ‘The same as Sandwich’. Ever since then, we’ve been getting creative with our sammich, like the over-enthusiastic guy at the top, in the picture that’s just asking to be Photoshopped.

Interesting fact about Sandwich – his mistress Martha Ray was murdered in Covent Garden in 1779. If they were married her murderer (and admirer of her singing, apparently) James Hackman could have been the first person to truely murder a sandwich. *ba dum tsch*

So, take the opportunity to head down to Subway (one of those 24-hour ones, probably) and grab one. But if you’re a bit strapped for cash, don’t worry. I made the ultimate student sandwich. If you haven’t been following my Plurk, then here’s a catch-up:

SAMMICH

Bread: Whatever’s cheapest where you shop. Its quality doesn’t matter. This bread here was 60p a loaf.

Toast bread lightly so it has crunch. Lightly butter and cover both sides very lightly in barbeque sauce. Add a double layer of chicken (or ham, which works as well). Add more barbeque sauce, then add some grated cheese and assorted salad.

This cost me in total about £3 for a good 6 or 7 sandwiches. Sure, it’s not the best sandwich, but it’s awesome for the price. Just like the ones you get at Aldi, trust me.

So I ask. What’s your favourite sandwich? Any rude answers will just make me assume that your idea of a good sandwich is in bed between two fat, toothless, old members of your same sex, naked.
