The Experiment.

With yesterday being a bit lack lustre, I remembered a brilliant little project I’ve always wanted to try.

Facebook status

Yeah, I wanted to do that little disposable camera-on-a-bench thing. You know, that little project on a site called The Plug which I mentioned yonks ago? I wanted to do that.

For those who can’t be arsed to click a link, the description is pretty self-explanatory. What they did is attach a disposable camera to a bit of string on a bench and tell people to take photos with it. Sure enough, they did. They aren’t the most amazing photos if they were part of an album, but to me it’s just an insight into the lives of so many people. I like that. I wanted to do that myself ever since I read that article all those years ago…

"Hey, bench-sitter!"

I woke up at 9 this morning (I know, 9am!) to go to Wilkinsons to buy the supplies I needed. Turns out the one in Poole doesn’t do disposable cameras any more, so I went to ASDA, which had one for £2. Happy days.

I hastily drew up a little explanation of what’s going on to go with it, then set out to Poole Park to find a good bench to put it on.

This was at about 11 or 12 today. It couldn’t be tied any more securely with string. I mean seriously, these are knots even Neil Brownless would be proud of. Even in the tags for that 12seconds video, I mention it’ll still probably get nicked.

Well it did.

It wasn't anywhere in sight, even. =/

Surprise, surprise. The Great British public lets me down again. Well done, Poole.

By the looks of it, someone actually cut the rope rather than tore it or tried to fray it with a key or something. As in someone had scissors or a knife or something and had cut it off. Seriously, Poole. I know they shut on Sunday, but ASDA is 24 hours. It’s £2. Oh deary me. What’s humanity come to?

Okay, a little over-exaggerated, there. But still, what does that say about society if you can’t leave something worth £2 around without it getting taken. I hate to say this, but "Tut, those youths today."

It could’ve been anyone, granted. But there’s two "minorities" in Poole. There’s the old people, then there’s the younger generation. I’m sure you’ll agree that you don’t walk past old people worried about being stabbed, do you? So well, the finger points in one direction.

Maybe one day I’ll try it in uni when I’ve got plenty of time to sit and make sure they don’t take it. If they do try and take it, I’ll have a bit of a Rogue Traders moment with a camera asking why they like stealing things. I’m hoping it won’t get that bad, though.

Ah well, it was worth a try…

How long did it last before you went back to check it was still there! Some people…can’t trust them! If you’d locked down a digital camera with super duper locks and bolts someone would have been out with industrial bolt clippers! What is the world coming to!

    Hi Matt

That’s a real shame about your camera. I was with a group of people walking round the park and we saw it and though it was a cracking idea. We took a picture of ourselves and saw it was almost used up so we hoped it would find its way back to you. We left a message on the paper you’d left but I guess that got nicked too.

Don’t give up. Just make sure you hide in a bush close by and keep watch. You may earn a name for yourself, but it’ll be worth it!
