Best. Week. Ever. – 30 Seconds To Mars

Little side-note: It’s probably not the best week ever, but more like “The best week I’ve had in a while – certainly so far in 2010, but perhaps not in my whole entire life”, but that didn’t really make for a snappy title.

Well hey there. This week’s essentially a busy week for me – and a fun one at that. I’ve got plenty of university work to do, but with things like Hadouken and Carnage distracting me, it’s a little difficult. However yesterday was the turn of 30 Seconds to Mars to distract me from my work. To be fair, they did that job very well.

Opening of 30STMI’ve never really been to a proper gig. The nearest thing I’d been to that could remotely be considered a ‘gig’ is that YouTuber one in London last year. I’m pretty sure that doesn’t really count, so Steve took me to a proper one with support bands and everything. It just so happened to be 30 Seconds to Mars, which is always a welcome bonus.

I’d kind of garnered what to expect from movies and videos and all that lark, so I wasn’t totally going into it in the dark. I knew it probably wasn’t a good idea to wear my Mr. Tickle T-shirt and come wearing several layers “just in case” but, well, that’s all I knew.

Bang bang bang... Once St eve picked me up, we headed pretty much straight away to the BIC where they were playing to catch the support band Lost Alone, who I can only describe as looking like they just jumped out of The Mighty Boosh. They were okay, but nothing exactly spectacular. But then another support band came on. God knows who they were, but they had a sign and everything, so they must be legit. They hit some bins and stuff, it was cool.

Then there was a massive long time before 30 Seconds to Mars came on. The crowd got a bit restless – not like you’d expect emos to get rowdy – and threw bottles and cups at each other, but I’d kind of come to expect that sort of thing.

Then 30 Seconds To Mars happened.

Lighting FTW

Tell you what, they know how to put on a show. All fancy lighting and screens, it was rather epic. Naturally, not being a active 30 Seconds To Mars follower, there were songs I had absolutely no idea what they were. But for a recent classic such as Kings and Queens, I totally knew the words and really got into it. Problem is people didn’t know the words even to that. Eh, well, a collective win for the floor, methinks.

About half way through I realised why I hadn’t really been to many gigs in the past – I’m a bit claustrophobic. I say a bit, mainly because I don’t panic if a room’s too small. I only really get restless if I can’t move. Sadly enough I realised this as I was caving in Longtown last year, and so have strived to stay out of those situations as much as possible. But hey, you know what, they put on a good enough show for me to not really care… until they stopped. That’s when I just needed to leave ASAP.

Woop!

But ay, it was a good night. Steve, who had a bad throat at the start of the gig, ended up in his own words “sounding like a camp pigeon” and, well, who can argue with that?

They even tweeted a photo to show how awesome we are. How nice are they? :)
