Technology is awesome sometimes, isn’t it.
See now it’s rare that I like to big something up that’s already as big as this (okay, maybe I lied) but I think something as epic as Spotify deserves it’s own blog post, seeing as it’s like music royalty nowadays.
I’ve been a big time lover of the last.fm tool. Scrobbling, finding new tracks and seeing trends in my music taste is all well and good, but what about when I want to listen to some serious tunage?
I could turn on the radio. Radio 1 prides itself on bringing new music to the forefront. It’s got the fan-base certainly and their playlist meetings go on forever, but they still manage to regurgitate Justin Bieber and N-Dubz onto the airwaves several times a day. I’m all for new music, but please, give me something that hasn’t been compiled using auto-tune, a insignificant child and a tosser, please.
There’s always Last.fm too. But where Last.fm falls down is when you’ve scrobbled a couple of songs you wouldn’t normally listen to – like Christmas songs, a free song you downloaded to see what it was like, or any song by The Sugarbabes – it’ll base any future recommendations on it. The other day I got some random Christmas remix come though which would’ve been awesome a few month’s back isn’t any more.
It’s pretty much this that led me to scour the Internets for a Spotify invite. Admittedly I didn’t have to look very hard, so it didn’t take very long.
Instantly I fell in love.
For anyone who doesn’t know what Spotify is, it’s essentially the lovechild of iTunes and a decent radio station. There’s two options – you can either search for a song or artist and pick your own songs to play, or you can set your likings (such as 90s and 00s pop and rock, if you have awesome taste for example) to a radio player and it’ll pick out a bunch of songs and play them for you. Lovely.
It’s not just a pitiful selection of well-known songs as has come to be the case of last.fm (after such an awesome start too. It makes me sad.
) there’s most of the fully fledged artists going on there. Any artist I’ve searched for so far has had at least a couple of songs I know by them on there and that’s including Driftless Pony Club.
I’m on Spotify Free which is essentially the fully fledged service as it stands, just with a scattering of advertisements in between tracks. I can handle that, seeing as it’s not constant bombardments from Gavin from Autoglass, the bastard. Spotify Premium is £10 a month and you get offline playlists, mobile Spotify, no ads and a handful of other features I probably wouldn’t use. But if I had an iPhone I might be tempted. I mean, offline playlists means it’s essentially £10 for unlimited iTunes. Sorted.
In short then. If anyone gives you an invite to Spotify, take it with both hands. Give it a try. There’s a chance it’s not your thing, but there’s every chance you’ll love actually listening to those music tracks copyright holders on YouTube really don’t want you hearing for free. It’s lovely

if you could send me an invite or tell me how you got yours i would greatly appreciate it. ive been on the internet for the last 4 hours and i can’t find a single invite that works
Hi Matt, does your Spotify account come with free invites? Because I would really like one also. I see that all the holes and backdoors have been fixed now, so now the only thing that works is begging…
Sorry guys, Spotify Free doesn’t come with any invites. If I get any though I’ll pass them on to you =]
