Inception & Toy Story 3

Oh hey. Long time no see. For that reason, you’re treated to a "I did this, then did that" blog post. Don’t pretend you don’t enjoy them.

First let’s rewind about a month ago. I caught the Toy Story bug. I know it’s a bit of a lame thing to get excited about, but for someone who’s waited 15 years to see what Woody and Buzz get up to in their final hours this is a big deal. Like, a really big deal.

Now – like Doctor Who on crack – we’re jumping forward to last week. By this point I’d heard both "Toy Story 3 is awesome!" as well as "Inception is awesome!" and so I was caught with a dilemma: Go with street cred or nostalgia?

Well, in the end I didn’t really get the choice. Inception was wanted, and Inception it was. And I’m glad it was.

Inception

EPIC MAN POSENow if you’ve never heard of Inception until now, I’d love to give you a quick overview of the storyline but I know less now than I did before I watched it. It’s essentially that bloke from Titanic scaring people while they’re asleep. His little team can manipulate people’s dreams and plot an idea in their minds – so long they go deep enough – to make them do things.

I think the thing that made the most sense were the ending credits. Not to say that I wanted this film over with – the films amazing – just it’s not a film for someone who wants to know what’s going on all the time. Essentially, it’s not a film for Anne Robinson, David Cameron or Supernanny.

But go see it, really. Do it. Or I’ll make you go.

Toy Story 3

I thought that would be the end of it (I mean hey, I’m a student, I’m not made of money) but then we decided to go see Toy Story 3 in the end anyway the next week.

SlinkyWe got there and had to stand in a queue. Yeah. We waited in a queue with a combined age probably younger than ours to see a movie that was released a good few weeks beforehand. We thought we’d be safe thinking all the annoying kids would have seen it already. But of course that didn’t work out to be the case because, well, it’s school holidays. That means all kids go everywhere, rather than the just the good kids getting treated.

It was my first 3D movie, too. I mean, I’ve been given 3D glasses before but that’s either been to watch Derren Brown be all novel on TV or to complete the look for Beauty and the Geek themed outings. I’d not seen one of these new 3D films before. Back in my day it was all Spy Kids 3D with either crimson red things or 90s jumpsuit blue things jumping out at you.

I was surprised they even go to the bother of doing 3D adverts before the film. Okay, so it made the advert break about half an hour long but I don’t mind watching a giant pack of Pombears on a screen if they’re being digitally rubbed in my face. Meh. That’ll probably get boring.

This movie contains 0% Bo Peep, which is a shame. But yeah, the actual movie was adorable. If you haven’t, watch the first two films, wait about 12 years, then watch Toy Story 3 and you’ll experience what any kid my age would experience. It’s one thing crying at some bloke dying on EastEnders (well, what’s new?), but it’s suddenly acceptable having a tear in your eye watching the final scenes of this film. It’s every kid’s gutting feeling being re-enacted in all three dimensions for you to watch. Roar.

(Of course, that ‘roar’ means that the above paragraph is now of average manliness.)

So yeah. In short, go watch both Toy Story and Inception if you want to go out with the kids and without the kids this summer, respectively. Well, you could take them to see Inception, but have fun trying to explain to them what’s going on. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

@Xepha I didn’t set out for this blog to include Inception, but thought I’d best mention it. =] Toy Story is amazing in general, but I thought Inception was the better movie.

Anyone sane has to love Toy Story. =]
