I don’t think I’ve been to an away game for a good ten years (Ignoring MK Dons because, well, everybody ignores MK Dons) so any game of football I have seen in recent memory involved the heartache and tribulation caused by Northampton Town Football Club.
So while watching Soccer AM back in the summer while they did the draw for the Johnston’s Paint Trophy second round and seeing AFC Bournemouth being drawn against Yeovil Town, my mind immediately went to Twitter. Ash supports Yeovil (for some unfortunate reason) and knew he would be rather pleased of this fact. Completely ignoring the fact that they’re both in the same league, of course.
Fast forward a few weeks to tonight and me, Ash and Steve were pulling up outside Dean Court prepping ourselves for a game which could be massively underwhelming.
Turns out it was for the first half if you’re a Yeovil fan. Three goals down in 45 minutes is never a good sign. Credit to them, the Yeovil fans still had an air of humour about them. I think they knew they weren’t going to do very well anyway, despite being just under Bournemouth in the league.
Things perked up in the second half, with Yeovil getting a couple of goals, the last of which came in the 88th minute. Bournemouth seemed pretty antsy about that fact in the dying minutes and gave away a few silly corners and free kicks, but unfortunately no joy came from them for Yeovil, who just had to be happy with almost a win. Almost.
They came within a few inches of going into extra time dead on 90 minutes, but Bournemouth will be thanking the woodwork for that one.
While the last five minutes were of possible League One skill, the other 85 just seemed sub-Cobblers material. Believe me, that’s saying something. But Yeovil fans seem used to that fact, whereas Cobblers fans just keep whining about it all the time. I’m not really sure which is better in that respect, but hey.
It made for a different Tuesday night in Bournemouth, anyway. I hope I can get a couple more games in before I have to leave as their stadium isn’t bad. I mean, it’s only got three stands, but hey, what they have isn’t too shabby.
