Deal or No Deal Live

Well, that was a surreal point in my life.

A few weeks ago I get a random call from an unknown number. Turns out it’s Endemol calling me (y’know, as you do) asking if I’d like to pop down to watch the recording of a Deal or No Deal game. I hadn’t applied since, well, a couple of years ago so it was a bit of a surprise, but a welcome one.

The invite was for me and two others to pop to Bristol to watch the rehearsal for their Deal or No Deal Live special they’re doing over the next two weeks. All I had to do was sign a confidentiality agreement, which I might breach while I’m writing this but hey, it’s only the entertaining bits people generally don’t see anyway. So sorry if I annoy you, Endemol. I hope you’ll forgive me and let me open a box or something some day (as that would be hilarious).

Me, Tim and his friend James popped along to The Paintworks where it was filmed yesterday for this recording. After originally going in the wrong door and almost being labelled as box openers, we pop into the waiting room for the audience. As everyone’s asked to wear black, it was a bit like Noel Edmonds had just died or something.

The room was filled with Deal or No Deal nerds, security and… us. A right mix of people were there, but apparently they were all asked because they’re proper nerds for the game. Got to be passionate about something, I guess…

But this holding room was packed lots of classic Deal or No Deal stuff, like their Scrooge or Santa board, a giant Christmas turkey and, of course, a cardboard cutout of Noel himself you could get a picture with… had they not taken your cameras off of you for confidentiality reasons. Awkward.

Free tea and coffee was a welcome plus, as well as a constantly playing DVD box set of the game (no, seriously) playing in the background. But we were well looked after I guess. More so than we have been at other recordings like Britain’s Got Talent, which was more like a cattle market than anything.

We get in the studio eventually and greeted by a compere who isn’t an actual arse this time. Although he picks on us for being young and that dreaded word ‘students’. But it’s to be expected I suppose.

Probably shouldn’t go into details about what actually happened on the day apart from the person playing it as a mock-up without any money won £250,000. Shame on you, lady. Next time play it for realsies.

In short, it was a nice little trip to Bristol, however brief, and I’d love to do it again as the show’s got a great atmosphere in the studio. It’s all so intimate in there. But yes. Great fun. Watch the live shows on Channel 4 for the next two weeks for the show’s 6th birthday or something stupid like that. That’s actually mental.
