Okay, little bit of a nerd-gasm going on here. Don’t say you haven’t been warned.
So I had an original Xbox back in the day. I was loving myself a bit of Quantum Redshift and the original Halo on it. Then it was time to step it up into the high-def era and join the rest of the hardcores on the Xbox 360. If you’re looking for some gaming love, and not looking for a girlfriend any time soon, I suggest you get an Xbox. Just… don’t expect to get any, kay?
I’m on Xbox Live, too, with the usual username stupler. I really only have one to connect to people now. Gold subscription’s too costly, and the Xbox takes up way too much time if it’s a good enough game, so I don’t want to waste my money. On the rare occasion I do have Gold, then come play against me sometime, yeah?
I’ve played these lovely little games here on in. They have Matt Crouch’s Seal of Awesome on them, so you know they’re good:
Call of Duty 4 - Perhaps one of the greatest games I’ve ever owned. I’ve always been a big fan of the Halo series for shooting games, but now I can easily play online, Call of Duty 4 has the edge. It seems Call of Duty has more variety to choose from than Halo 3 in terms of online play, but it has more idiots on there, too.
Forza Motorsport 2 – This game came free with the bundle we got from Game, so I’m quite happy to take a free game. It’s for the hardcore driving gamers, really. It’s very realistic… too realistic for me to handle and crash into the barriers on every corner. Well, it’s one way of stopping without wearing out your brakes…
Gears of War – I only really got this game because Simon and Tranquin told me to. It’s an Xbox 360 classic, which you can’t just ignore. I didn’t think I’d like the whole third person thing going on in terms of shoot-em-ups, but it’s intuative enough to enjoy. It’s grousome and probably not one for your little Johnny’s 10th birthday.
Guitar Hero 3 – To be honest, I only got this game just so I could have the Dance Dance Revolution experience without looking like a complete idiot while doing so. I got it and I love it. I’m not very good at it, but I love it. My only gripe about it is that the achievements are too hard to get for someone who doesn’t do it all day, every day.
Halo 3 - My first proper Xbox 360 game. After owning the previous two titles on the Xbox and loving every minute (Although loving more of the original Halo. But yeah.) I knew I’d find myself loving this one too. It’s so pick-up-and-play-able I love it. You don’t need to really know any tactics, it’s just all out warefare. Everyone loves warfare.
Hexic HD – This game actually came free with my console, which was a pleasant surprise. Because it’s free, I don’t want to get rid of it. So it sits there, rarely played. I sucked too much at the original Hexic to really play this game a lot. Meh. Achievements are Achievements.
Lips – It’s basically SingStar for the Xbox. It’s a little bit camp for my liking, but still, I love singing really badly and getting praise for it. I’m liking the fact you can import any song you own into the game and get scored for it. That makes a change from singing badly without getting points for it, I suppose.
Mass Effect – I got this game for Christmas and, after hearing some good things about it, thought I might as well play it. I’m not a fan of the whole control scheme (and the mass of controls it has), but it’s a game to pass the time. Assuming you don’t mind having too much choice, then play this game, yeah?
N+ – You’ve probably heard of this game before if you like playing games on the Internet. It’s basically a remake of the classic Flash and downloadable game N, which was the game of choice for computer room doss lessons. I had some spare Microsoft Points so I thought “Why not?”. It’s got some good multiplayer games in there, if you can find anyone to play against…
The Orange Box – If I’m completely honest, I only got this game to satisfy my addiction to the idea of Portal, the puzzle game included in this game where you shoot little portals around in order to defeat ‘GlaDOS’ - some corrupt robot. I’m sure the other bits are awesome, too, but Portal is reason alone to get this game.
PGR 4 - After getting Forza 2 with the console, I wanted a racing game which wasn’t so fussy about what sort of gravel you were on or cry if your reversing light didn’t work. It’s very easy to play, providing you pick the right vehicle or motorbike. Online play sucks, because everyone just picks the best car and beats your arse with it. Meh.
Scene It! LCA - It’s a great party game, for sure. It’s a bit like Buzz! for the PS2 but on movies, obviously. The Big Button Pads are great little controllers, but I just hope they bring out a more general knowledge game which uses them. If I loved my movies, this would probably by my most favouritest one.
Undertow - I got my Xbox around Cristmas ’07, which was the same time the Xbox Live service was being rubbish. So, as compensation, Microsoft gave everyone the opportunity to download it for free. Sure, it sounds like it’s been made in the office by two bored businessmen, but it was free, so I won’t complain.
Viva Piñata - I’d compare it to The Sims on crack. What you’ve got to do is look after wild piñatas, give them a home and make them do the ‘romance dance’ to have baby piñatas. It came free with the Xbox, so I’m not complaining. And achievements that children can get? I’m on it!
